I finally took the plunge and got my own website…still have a lot to learn (like not to save everything to draft and then wonder why it’s not showing up as a post) but this way I’m learning it all at once.

Sorry about taking so long between posts. I’m just learning to use WordPress, so needed to take a couple days to figure out which end was up.

As I said in the last post, when I started looking for Nintendo DS hacks, I’m really glad I didn’t read Engadget’s contest first, I might have given up hope…well, knowing me, that’s not likely, but I would have seriously wondered what was going on.

Luckily, instead I ended up here reading about something called the R4 Revolution. Unfortunately their site is a bit difficult to navigate and I never could get the “Where to buy” list to work, but thankfully, Amazon has it available.

So, why do I want this?

Simple answer – because it allows you to hack your own DS even if you can’t solder two wires together (don’t worry, I can’t either…I always have to enlist my husband for hands-on hacking projects).

Is it the only thing you can use? No, there are others, but the R4 is the one I’ve read the best reviews about.

With the R4 or any other similiar card (there are some older ones that were built using GBA cartridges, but the newer ones I’ve seen fit into the DS cartridge slot and have a space to insert a mini SD card) you can download programs that other hackers have written for the DS. They are called homebrew (lol don’t try searching just for homebrew without including Nintendo DS…you’ll get pages and pages of how to make beer) and there are programs for almost anything you could want your game to do. Tomorrow I’ll talk about a few “not just for kids” homebrew programs.

Nintendo DS Hacks – Fun for children and adults!

A little while back, my husband decided to get me a Nintendo DS. The plan was that he would take my old GBA and he and our older son could play games together, while the younger one played on his Leapster (yep, we all love video games).

I still remember my first Nintendo, the original gray game system that made Pong and PacMan look as outdated as they really were. I had so much fun playing Super Mario Brothers I, II, and III, and playing Tetris against a friend was awesome! When the Nintendo became outdated, I bought other, newer game systems, but none ever produced the Wow! moment that that first Nintendo did.

Until now, that is. I’ll admit. I really didn’t expect much of the DS. I figured it was a GBA with an extra screen and newer games, but I really didn’t think it would be terribly different, and I definitely didn’t expect to fall in love with it. But I did.

One reason is that the DS is extremely versatile. You can play all your old favorite games on it if you love video games like me, but more than that, you can play a ton of games that you’d never be able to play on a GBA. Even better, you’re not stuck with games.

If you’re a parent, you might be saying, “But the DS is just another children’s toy, something I’ll hear more than I want about when Christmas rolls around. Why would I want one?”

The thing is, the DS isn’t just another game system. In fact, one of my first thoughts when I started using mine was, “When are they going to make a DS cell phone? I’d be first in line!” And with that, the idea of hacking my DS was born.

Now, I’m not a supergeek. I can’t take my alarm clock apart and turn it into a time machine. If I had to come up with hacks all on my own, they’d be something like this idea which was submitted to the Engadget Sony PSP vs. Nintendo DS Hacks contest. By the way, I’m really glad I didn’t end up on that page when I first started looking, I ‘d think that there were no good hacks for the DS, which is far from the truth. In fact, there are so many great hacks for the DS (most of which DON’T require you to take the system apart, thankfully) that the great games are the second best reason to buy one!
